Following complaints about the condition of the 'bus stop off area' in The Street, Hawkinge, the Gazette have contacted district councillor David Godfrey.

We described to Cllr Godfrey how the stop consists of a single post and a patch of mud and explained that there could be health and safety issues as drivers use a private driveway to off-load their passengers.

Cllr Godfrey has quickly followed up on the matter and has received a reply from the district council which states that the bus stop is to be removed as part of a long-term improvement plan for the 16A route.

The correspondence which Cllr Godfrey received says that the council have been looking into this issue with Kent Highways Services and Stage Coach bus company.

They have disclosed that there is a long term plan for improving various aspects of all the stops along the 16A route.

However they say, the plan will remove the stop referred to and only allow passengers to alight the vehicle on the opposite side by providing a bidirectional sign and refurbishing the stop and shelter."
