Stretch a tenner challenge

Hawkinge Acrise and Paddlesworth WI

Following three consecutive months of frantic activity during July, August and September, when we had a garden party, a visit from our West Kent link and a Birthday Party, all requiring the catering skills of the committee, it was a relief to be running an “ordinary” meeting.

After singing Jerusalem the President, Carole Seabrook, extended birthday greetings to Mesdames Bassett, Hoy, Orchard, Sayer and Wood and asked them to join her at the Birthday Table for tea during social time – it turned out to be quite a squash as several ladies who had been unable to be “on the table” previously also joined in.

After business was concluded during which we were reminded of the Jumble Sale on 13th October, the day trip to Westminster Abbey on 17th October, informed that there would be a curry lunch before the next meeting on 6th November and reminded that there was to be a Coffee Morning held at WI HQ at 9 Beer Cart Lane in Canterbury on 30th November.

The speaker, Patsy Baker, was introduced. Her topic “A Day in the Life of a Makeup Artist” proved to be quite fascinating. In fact it wasn’t just a day it was how events in her life had led her to this career; she informed us of all the famous stage and film stars she had worked with, her short time working with burns victims, and then her time working in conjunction with Saga holidays. Quite a career!

The monthly competition - you know how sometimes you say something or write something down and then because of a lack of proper communication its interpretation differs from yours – this is just what happened with the monthly competition!

As the speaker was a makeup artist the committee had thought it would be ideal to have our ladies “paint or decorate” a plate so that Patsy could judge the winner. Alas it soon became clear that we had failed in our communication skills as all the plates were professional in origin. However the entries were all quite beautiful and Josie Newson won with a plate decorated with a profusion of poppies – so appropriate for this time of year.

In November we have the Annual Meeting when the committee and president are elected. This will be preceded by a Curry Lunch which is being put on as a part of the challenge from the Federation to “Stretch a Tenner”. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Village Hall. If you are interested in belonging to a very cheerful and welcoming group of ladies why not come along and see what we might be able to offer you. Contact numbers are 01303 891420 and 863146.
