Responding to the unrest in Burma, MP for Dover and Deal Gwyn Prosser has said he shares the almost universal view that the sooner the illegal military regime falls the better.

In an email sent to the Gazette he says he applauds the incredible bravery of the monks and the wider population of Rangoon who are demonstrating against the junta and pledging support of Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for four years and until last week hadn’t been seen for four years.

The world community want to see her installed as the democratically elected leader of Burma.

Mr Prosser made the point that Gordon Brown was amongst the first of the world leaders to press the EU and the UN to put pressure on the Burmese regime to exercise restraint and he shares the hope that the direct intervention of the Secretary General’s envoy will help restrain the brutality of that evil totalitarian junta and that in the longer term, increasing sanctions will help replace the Military leadership with a democratic government.
