Local post offices earmarked for closure

Eight local post office branches could go under plans to reduce the network of branches across the UK.

Kent could lose 58 post office branches under the plans.

Kent County Council has already launched a campaign against the move, urging residents to "use or lose" their post office services.

The government has said cuts are needed because the network loses £4m every week.

Under EU legislation, member governments are not allowed to subsidise private companies.

Liberal Democrat MEP for Kent, Sharon Bowles, said people in the county were facing "a post office crisis".

She said: "Post offices are a necessity for thousands of people in Kent. They provide an important link to the local community and to key services."

The 8 local branches earmarked for closure are:

Duke Of York's School, Guston, Dover
Enbrook Valley, 99 Enbrook Valley, Eynsford, Folkestone
Littlestone, 4 Warren Road, New Romney
New Bridge, 15 Bench Street, Dover
Saltwood, The Fountain Stores, Saltwood, Hythe
Seabrook Road, 246 Seabrook Road, Hythe
Shorncliffe, 2 Royal Military Avenue, Folkestone
Tower Hamlets, 14 West Street, Dover
