A good time for KCC to review A260 safety

Have your say!

Dear Editor,

Re: Opposition to new road layout

I am not surprised that the people living in Aerodrome Road are unhappy with this scheme. I dont see how this will deal with speeding traffic on Canterbury Road, surely the speed camera deals with the problem at its current location.

It would make more sense to alter the new roundabout at the junction of Canterbury Road and Spitfire Way (north end) to be the same as proposed at the Areodrome/Canterbury Road junction, giving priority to the north/south Spitfire Way, Canterbury Road bypass.

Speeding traffic is a real problem along the entire length of the A260, especially when mixed with the heavy goods vehicles.

This is an issue which needs to be addressed, for the safety of our children, our elderly, who sometimes take their lives in their hands trying cross this road.

One pedestrian crossing on an 'A' road like the 260, running through several villages is not enough.

Come on KCC lets take this opportunity to review openly the safety issues on this road, once and for all, not just the bit that runs through Hawkinge

Dear Editor,

I wholeheartedly support Treemendos.

The recently proposed traffic management scheme is one borne out of a committee, and will cost a lot of money where the achievement of the desired outcome is always doubtful.

Would it not be simpler ( and therefore cheaper) just to alter the signs on the roundabouts to the north and south of the village (A 260 just north of the speed camera and at the bottom of White Horse Hill respectively) to show that the through route is via Spitfire Way. Perhaps it would even be in order to indicate "Village Only (No through route)" for the direction to the village centre. It would even be possible to put a warning on these signs to the effect that it is a new layout and therefore not shown on satellite navigations systems - I have seen similar signs elsewhere.

The signs could be altered and the effects measured before we get involved in elaborate and costly schemes.

Grumpily as ever,

Lazarus

I agree that more effective signage would have been an effective idea. As to the proposals? Well yes, if you build an ineffective bypass then of course you will need to take additional and expensive measures to justify it's existence - even if that means taking passing trade away from the village centre itself, and making life very difficult for some of the residents (particularly those in Aerodrome Road who didn't purchase houses on a MAIN 'A' road, but will have to live on one all the same).

There certainly ARE other ways to slow traffic down, rather than to change the Aerodrome Road junction in it's entirety. A 500 signature + petition was put forward in October to Kent Highways, together with a joint objection from the majority of the 18 or so businesses that operate on Canterbury Road - particularly to that junction change.

It might interest readers to know that although there was a meeting with Kent Highways and they stated at the time that that particular part of the 'plan' didn't HAVE to go ahead if there were sufficient objection .... the first any one including businesses heard was a flyer through doors a week before the work commenced. A simple case of railroading. *shrugs*

I personally wonder if there in an ulterior motive to these measures. Perhaps the centre of the village, if the small shops close due to lack of business, will relocate up on the bypass itself?

Even more grumpily than Lazarus
