Shepway Councillors Peter and Christena Smith have been speaking to the Hawkinge Gazette explaining their views following the District councils decision to investigate further an apparent overpayment of benefits.

Cllr Peter Smith said: "I have been informed by the council that I am the subject of an investigation regarding an apparent over payment of certain benefits. The issue appears to be how these benefits sit alongside the allowance that  I receive as a district councillor.

"I am in receipt of benefits but have always sought to be totally open about my financial affairs with the council. Indeed, I have completed a great deal of the paperwork associated with these matters with the help of council officers.

"Any overpayment is the result of an error made in good faith, rather than any other reason. Therefore, I am confident that I will be vindicated in this process."

Cllr Christena Smith said: "We will co-operate fully with the authorities in this matter. We have asked that our membership of the local Lib Dem party be suspended until any legal process reaches a conclusion. 

"We feel that this helps to ensure that our colleagues can continue to work for the people of Shepway with minimal disruption.

"Although I am not under investigation, I have suspended my membership of the party, so I can fully support my husband."
