Second ferry terminal and marina planned

Plans for a second ferry terminal and new marina at the Port of Dover were unveiled at a customer and public consultation today (25 January).

Dover Harbour Board has drawn up proposals to reorganise the port’s Western Docks to create a second ferry terminal and build a waterfront development around a new marina. The current 400-berth marina is situated in this area of the port.

The Board announced the proposals last spring following a review of its capacity in the light of growing cross-Channel ferry traffic in recent years and forecasts for continued growth in the foreseeable future. The port’s Eastern Docks Ferry Terminal is operating at near full capacity.

“We are carrying out a thorough consultation with marina berth-holders to understand their needs and address any concerns,” said Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive, Dover Harbour Board.

The consultation is part of a study that is addressing the commercial issues of planning for the new marina. It is being carried out by independent specialist marina consultants Marina Projects Limited of Gosport.

“We believe a modern marina in the Outer Harbour could be a turnkey for a waterfront development of shops and restaurants, a hotel and residential property,” Mr Goldfield added.

The new round of public consultation on the port proposals opened at Dover Town Hall with an exhibition and public meeting today.
