Shepway residents are being asked to nominate their favourite piece of public art within the district.

The nomination can be for any art to which the public has access, such as sculpture, mosaic, street furniture or mural; outside or inside for instance in a library or park and it must have been completed between April 2006 and March 2007.

The judging panel  for the Rouse Kent Public Art Award, which carries a total prize value of £20,000, will announce the winner at a VIP dinner on May 23.

Folkestone library's Glazed Screen’ by Chris Ofili won the prize in 2003. It was commissioned by Shepway District Council and Kent County Council.

The piece consists of a translucent glass screen located in the foyer space and lit from below. The vibrant colours are reflected in a mirrored ceiling. Painted in Chris Ofili’s characteristic free-hand, the screen helps visitors navigate their way through the space of the refurbished library.

The prize money was used to create descriptive panels for the artworks in the library foyer, café and for the gallery furniture, together with a workshop with local school children.

For details call Clair Bushnell on 01622 696460 or clair.bushnell@ kent.gov.uk. Or download the nomination form on www.rousekentpublicartaward.co.uk. Closing date for entries is March 2.
