Battle lines drawn for Shepway council showdown

The battle lines have been drawn for May's council elections following today's announcement (16 January) that an alliance of ten named independent candidates will be fighting to win a considerable number of seats on Shepway council.

Amongst the Independent group are Andrew Barchi, Cllr David Callahan, Cllr. Tom Gibbs, Cllr. Steve Godden, Carole Hawkins, Martin Highland, Cllr. Joy MacMillan, Adrian Metherell, Martin Ross and Cllr. Colin Tearle.

They are attacking Shepway's performance record and are asking voters if the near ₤1000 for every man, woman and child in the district paid to the council is value for money.

Shepway Council has been judged by the Audit Commission as ‘ weak ’ in their assessment ranking of the council claim the alliance.

The Independents, who say their numbers are growing believe party politics should play no part in "this poorly run and weak council " and that May 2007 will be "ripe for change".

The full press release is published below.
