HAWKINGE ACRISE & PADDLESWORTH WI...

Some clubs don’t meet in August or have an outing, but it is traditional for this club to meet every month and so it was decided to have a Member’s Afternoon where we could just enjoy each other’s company and catch up on all the gossip.

After Jerusalem was sung, birthday greetings were accorded to Mesdames Maddox, Vine, Whitehouse and Wilson and they were invited to the birthday table.

Of course all carefully laid plans can come unstuck and we had recently been approached by the new Community Warden, Tanya Clark, asking if she could come and meet the ladies at one of our meetings.  This seemed like an ideal time for her to visit.

Tanya is a delightful young lady and had some very helpful and interesting information to impart – from personal security in the home to securing one’s belongings - and is a welcome addition to the village.

However, it was felt that perhaps the ladies shouldn’t be allowed to just sit and chat all afternoon (aren’t the committee a rotten lot!) and so there were four quizzes to attempt; Hettie Quinn brought in her sugar craft to display and for members to try – I saw one very beautiful butterfly; there was also a display of scrap books - some old and some of more recent times – several curio items and correspondence to be read.

I would just like to mention a charming letter that has been received from Mark Wyatt of Kent Community Recycling, expressing his delight that the WI, not only locally but nationally, is making a stand against excessive packaging of consumer goods, thank you Mark.

Then all of a sudden our afternoon was at an end and it was time to give out the answers to all those quizzes, prizes were handed out to all the winners – well done ladies!  The monthly competition was for a short summer poem – won by Linda Barnes

SUMMER IS STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM
WORLD CUP, WIMBLEDON AND QUEENS
PICNICS AND GARDEN PARTIES GALORE
FLOWER FESTIVALS TO DELIGHT US ALL

THESE HAPPY, HAPPY MONTHS
SHOULD FILL US WITH DELIGHT
LETS ALL ENJOY WHAT SUMMER BRINGS
TO SOON, THE EVENINGS DRAWING IN

Next month we mark the foundation in 1928 of our WI, and so our Birthday Meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th September, starting at 2pm in the Hawkinge Village Hall.  Our speaker is Mad Jack Fuller “Squire of Brightling”, if you are free do come along and help us celebrate.  Should you wish to have any further information please contact the Assistant Secretary, Wendy Bell, on 01303 893858.

Linda Barnes
President
