BARBECUED LITTER BINS GO UP IN SMOKE...

Three litter bins have been destroyed after careless picnickers dumped their smouldering disposable barbecues into them.

An appeal has now gone out to ensure barbecues are out before they are put into litter bins.

Two of the bins were in the Lower Leas Coastal Park in Folkestone and one on the banks of the Royal Military Canal at Hythe.

“Obviously we are very pleased that people are taking the time and trouble to put their barbecues in the bins rather than simply discarding them. But we would appeal to everyone to make sure the barbecues are completely out first,” said Cllr Carole Waters, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Tourism.Shepway Council is now making and installing special metal racks that will be attached to litter bins in popular picnic areas for the disposal of barbecues.

“Areas like the Lower Leas Coastal Park and Hythe Canal are wonderful for al fresco meals and it’s great to see so many people enjoying themselves in the wonderful weather we have been having lately. We don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, but would just ask them to take extra care when they dispose of their barbecues,” said Cllr Waters.
