TERROR ALERT HITS EAST KENT AIRPORTS...

Air passengers using local airports are being warned to expect delays after a major alleged terror plot sparked a security clampdown across the UK.

Kent International Airport at Manston is reported to be operating all flights to schedule but delays in processing were likely and passengers are being advised to arrive early to allow for security procedures. London Ashford Airport at Lydd reported all its flights are running to time.

The county's Police are reported to be o­n heightened terror alert. There is an increased police presence, including armed officers, at the Channel ports, Eurotunnel, Manston Airport and Ashford International station.

It is thought the alleged plot, which could have affected up to 10 aircraft, was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage.

High security is causing delays at all UK airports and the threat level to the UK has been raised by MI5 to critical.

The MI5's website states a critical threat level which means "an attack is expected imminently and indicates an extremely high level of threat to the UK".

Heathrow Airport has been closed to all incoming flights that are not already in the air, while some outbound services have been cancelled.
