TAKE-OFF FOR LOCAL TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHTS...

Transatlantic flights between Kent International and Virginia in the United States of America will be introduced next year.

Airport officials announced that weekly non-stop flights between Kent International Airport at Manston and Norfolk International Airport, Virginia will begin next spring in time for the Jamestown 2007 celebration.

The charter service will start in May and will run until October. Weekly flights will depart each Wednesday. The trip takes about nine hours.

Officials hope the initial service will be successful enough to allow a scheduled commercial service between Manston and the US to be set up.

Monarch Airlines will operate the flights using either an Airbus A330 or a Boeing 767ER. The Airbus carries 374 passengers and the Boeing 309.

An announcement is expected shortly from Infratil, the airport owners, about a further increase in flights after reports of another operator looking to fly out of Manston to several European destinations.
