HEALTH CENTRE PLANS THROWN OUT...

Relieved residents who fought to stop the building of a health centre and pharmacy in woods between Mill Lane and The Street in Hawkinge are  tonight celebrating after councillors supported the recommendations of Shepway council officers and the threw out the plans.

The proposed centre was first put forward last year but withdrawn before it went before Shepway planners. But this time residents opposing the plans heard councillors overwhelmingly reject the proposals at tonight's planning meeting (2 August). 

About thirty residents listened as Parish Council spokesman, Cllr Cyril Trice spoke out against surgery. He outlined three main reasons why it should not be built o­n the proposed site.

He said he area was part of a strategic gap, there was a tree preservation order dating back to 1998 and the increase in traffic would create a dangerous environment.

District Councillor Christina Smith also spoke out against the health centre as did Chairman of the Hawkinge Civic Society Stuart Hall.
