105 YEARS TO CLEAR DUNGENESS POWER STATION SITE

After 40 years of electricity production, Dungeness Power Station is set to close, but under the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority  timetable it will be 2111 before the site is finally cleared.

It is planned for both reactors to cease generating electricity in December 2006 when defuelling begins.

The fuel will then be taken out of the reactors and transferred to Sellafield for processing.

Dungeness A is one of 11 sites around the UK being taken out of service at a cost of about £56bn although the cost of decommissioning the Romney Marsh Power Station will be just £1.2bn.

The British Nuclear Group said the vast majority of radioactive material will be removed from the site by 2009.

All plants and buildings except for the reactor containment will be removed by 2021, with final site clearance scheduled for 2111.
