KCC  WITHDRAW CLOSURE PROPOSALS ON FOUR SCHOOLS

Kent County Council's withdrawal of closure proposals on four of the first batch of Kent schools is good news for many schools' campaigners, including those hoping to keep Selsted school open.

The county council considered advice from the School Organisation Advisory Board (SOAB) and agreed with the Board that Goodnestone, Langdon and St Radigund's in Dover, along with Seal St Lawrence in Sevenoaks would remain open.

Ripple School near Deal, which successfully fought off closure before will have to continue its battle after Kent County Council (KCC)  said it still planned to go ahead with its closure.

The county council also backed advice to merge four schools in Dover and four in Sevenoaks.

A public notice to amalgamate Melbourne Community Primary School with The Powell School in Dover, and South Deal Primary School with Mongeham Primary School in Deal will be issued on 1 September.

It will run for six weeks during which time any objections can be lodged.

KCC has yet to decide on the proposed closure of St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Aylesham.

Further announcements are also due to be made over the summer about other schools in the county.

Any objections to closures will be dealt with by an independent appeals committee in November.
