TOUR OF BRITAIN CYCLISTS PEDAL THROUGH SHEPWAY

Tour of Britain

As a prelude to the Tour De France, which is coming to the South East in 2007, a 100 mile stage of the Tour of Britain has been scheduled for Kent.

The Kent stage is starting from Rochester Cathedral before then heading to Paddock Wood and through to Hythe and Dover where there promises to be an exciting sprint in the High Street.

The riders will leave Dover and wind their way through narrow twisty country lanes before heading to the old Roman road into Canterbury.

The final section passes the St Lawrence county cricket ground on Old Dover Road in the city before the finish in Rheims Way.

Graham Gibbens of Kent County Council said: "Kent County Council is delighted to be welcoming this prestige race to our great county. It will give riders, spectators and TV crews alike the chance to see something of the glorious Kent countryside and will highlight the opportunities for tourism and business that Kent has to offer.

As a curtain-raiser to the spectacular Tour de France, itself scheduled to visit Kent next year, the Tour of Britain will be an exciting addition to the county's sporting calendar. I wish the organisers and the riders well".

The race starts in Glasgow on 29 August and finishes at Buckingham Palace in London on 3 September.
