MOTOR RACING TRACK RECORD SET AT EAST KENT AIRPORT

Steve Shanyaski and Richard Connolly, both 29,took ten hours building the longest ever scalextrix circuit  to get themselves into the Guinness Book of Records.

The 1km circuit was laid out o­n a runway at Kent International Airport, in Manston last week. It smashed the world record by more than 300m.

There was 1,105.57m of standard two-lane track, made up of 2,683 straights and 724 curves. The straights totalled 939.05m and the bends amounted to 166.52m.

To put it into context Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales, is 1,085m.

The pair then needed to do an entire lap without the Mini Cooper toy car spinning off – under the watchful eye of Guinness World Records judges. The track was so long, however, that getting round took 25 minutes.

Guinness World Records confirmed the duo, both from Stockport, had the new record for 'longest slot car track'.

The last record was set in Manchester in June 2000 and measured 777.24m.

The record came about when Zoo magazine offered two of its employees £10,000 to do something for the publication.
