Fewer 'A list' runners could improve Carey's Westminster bid

FEWER 'A LIST' RUNNERS COULD IMPROVE CAREY'S WESTMINSTER BID

County and District Councillor Susan Carey could find herself a strong contender for prospective  parliamentary candidate for Michael Howard's constituency  after it emerged that  some target seats were attracting hardly any applicants, and even safe seats like Folkestone and Hythe, had less than half of the so called "A list" expressing any interest.

Tory party deputy chairman Bernard Jenkin, sounded the retreat on the plan, which should have seen would-be MPs from the list selected in 35 of the key seats by August.

He is reported as saying that any constituency is entitled to draw stumps for now and re-advertise its vacancy at a later date.

Rumours that David Cameron is unhappy with some of the 100 or so names on the list of  55% female and 10% black or Asian have been denied by the party bosses.

Candidates were given until May 19 to apply for the first tranche of the 35 seats, but applications will have to be re-opened for several constituencies because too few people submitted their CVs.
