OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR SELSTED SCHOOL

Swingfield Parish Council has tonight (22 May) received a mandate to back the fight to save Selsted School from closure.

Chairman of Swingfield Parish Council Colin Tearle called the meeting at Swingfield and more than 120 people squeezed into the village hall eager to voice their opinions.

Cllr Tearle told the meeting that their local MP Michael Howard had telephoned him in the morning and although he was unable to attend, he would be backing the fight to save the school.

Councillors, governors and teachers from the school, residents and parents with children who attend the school, and the Save Selsted School Action Group, were all united in their aims to fight to save the school.

Many parents asked how it could be feasible to close the school when they were unable to find other local schools with spaces for their children who are currently at Selsted.

Chairman of the Governors Andrew Hayes told the meeting: "We are here to support in any way we can."

"It is going to be a struggle to keep the school open", he said.

But the Diocese of Canterbury Director of Education, Rupert Bristow sought to re-assure the meeting saying: "It is not a done deal".

No representative from the Local Education Authority attended the meeting.
