MORE TWISTS THAN CHUBBY CHECKER

The o­n off P&O takeover from Dubai Ports World has taken yet another twist after the Dubai company agreed to a delay and an investigaion into the security aspects of the deal.

Critics of the deal claim it would hand over control of key US ports to a company owned by the governtment of Dubai.

"The 45 day full investigation would be a significant step forward. But the devil is in the details," said Sen. Charles Schumer.

Schumer and Sen. Hillary Clinton, and New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez, have joined four Republicans to sponsor legislation that would require the port deal to be approved by Congress, not just the President.

"If we had confidence in the security of our ports, perhaps we would raise questions about this, but we wouldn't be so adamant that we want answers," Clinton said.

The debate centers o­n just how much control a foreign government could have over security at a port it operates.

Port Authorities, US Border Patrol and the Coast Guard would still be responsible for security. Unions would retain control of staffing of the New York and New Jersey ports.
