SHEPWAY PROJECTS GET £34,000

Local projects in Shepway are to get a £34,000 boost from Kent County Council.

£5,000 has been allocated for replacing trees on Folkestone High Street. Folkestone Town Council is working with Kent County Council and Shepway District Council to improve the town centre environment with bedding plants and trees.

But the lion's share goes to Hythe High Street which will be spruced up following an allocation of nearly £29,000. The work will begin mid-March for approximately three to four weeks. The maintenance work will include general tidying, new bollards and reinstating and repainting street lights.

Funding was approved by KCC Cabinet Member for Finance Nick Chard following recommendations made by the Chairman of KCC Shepway Local Board Chris Capon, after consultation with other local county councillors and Shepway District Council. The money has been raised through Council Tax levied on those owning a second home in the Shepway area.

Mr Chard said: "This is great news for Shepway residents. I am pleased that the county council is supporting these projects which will benefit the local community."

Chairman of KCC Shepway Local Board and a former Mayor of Hythe, Chris Capon said: "The projects will enhance key shopping streets in Folkestone and Hythe - making them more attractive to shoppers and visitors."
