Mid-Channel ferry emergency

Emergency services prepared for a mid-Channel emergency after reports were received of a fire aboard a Sea France ferry this morning (27 December).

The Nord Pas-de-Calais lorry-carrier had 58 freight passengers and crew on board and was sailing between the French port and Dover.

But SeaFrance said the incident was only an overheating generator transformer and the ship was continuing in service; it was not necessary to stop the sailing.

Coastguard surveyors were said to be ready to board the ferry after it docked at the Port of Dover. There were no casualties.
