A gang of women have stolen a number of purses from elderly shoppers in Folkestone, Hythe and Dover.

Local police said at least 19 purses were taken from elderly women who had first gone to the bank and before heading to the shops.

Officers said the gang are believed to be from eastern Europe.

Det Sgt Stuart Walker, of Kent Police, said: "I would advise ladies to keep their handbags safe by holding on to it at all times."

He said women who put their handbags in shopping trolleys should never leave the trolleys unattended.

And he advised women to keep their purse in a trouser pocket or an inside pocket of their coat.
