Plans for a new passenger terminal and one mile long runway at a Kent airport been delivered to Shepway District Council today (18 December)

It is proposed that Lydd airport, will handle 500,000 passengers a year and will be increasing the number of destinations. 

The expansion is planned in stages, with a capacity of two million passengers a year ultimately earmarked for the airport terminal.

The proposed 1,000ft runway extension, from 4,938ft to 5,902ft and costing £3m would mean planes carrying a greater fuel load would be able to reach a greater range of destinations. 

Opponents to the scheme for London Ashford Airport, at Lydd, say there are environmental hazards, as well as a nuclear risk posed by power stations at Dungeness but the airport's managing director, Zac Deir, said there had been extensive work on an Environmental Impact Assessment. 

It is described as a "blueprint of the development" and looks at environment, traffic and wildlife issues.
