M20 GRIDLOCK OVER CLEANER'S SACKING

More than a thousand lorries queued on the M20 last night following a strike in the channel port of Calais.

The port is being blockaded by members of the Calais Chamber of Commerce, who are striking over the dismissal of a cleaner.

Ferries to France stopped leaving Dover on Tuesday afternoon (28 November) after industrial action closed the French port.

Part of the coast-bound carriageway of the M20, leading to the Kent port, has been closed because of the dispute.

Kent Police put 'Operation Stack' into place on Tuesday afternoon, allowing lorries to park on the M20, which was closed between junctions 8 and 12.

Food, water and toilet facilities for the drivers, many of whom were stranded overnight was provided but it is expected the backlog of vehicles could take up to 12 hours to clear.

NorfolkLine ships continued operating a limited service between Dover and Dunkirk.

A restricted service for freight vehicles between Dover and Calais began operating this morning (29 November).
