HAWKINGE YOUTH AND COMMUNITY SPORTS COUNCIL AGM

By Patrick Lawrence

HY&CSC Annual General Meeting held at the Hawkinge Neighbourhood Partnership Offices, Thursday, 9th November, 2006

Thirteen people attended the meeting which proved very constructive despite the fact that much time was spent discussing the situation regarding the Parish Council's plans to sell the Spitfire Leisuredrome site considered an ideal location for our activities and was viewed by the majority of those present as a desperately needed facility for the youth of the village.

Some very positive suggestions were put forward by Swingfield Parish Council Chairman, Colin Tearle regarding facilities available in Swingfield and the need for our organisation to discuss activities and development proposals with the other Parish Councils in the surrounding area.

Mrs. Pat Blanks and Mr. Mark Button agreed to serve on the HY&CSC Executive Committee.

HAWKINGE YOUTH & COMMUNITY SPORTS COUNCIL TECHNICAL ADVISOR REPORT 2006

CHURCHILL SCHOOL

The basketball club meets at the school on a Wednesday after classes.

Coaching is limited until such time as the light covers have been fitted which is due any day having just recently been acquired form abroad.

The Head teacher has requested that permanent painted lines be marked in place of the black taped lines and samples are undergoing tests.

Two youngsters training for their basketball apprentice awards have had to drop out due to their own school homes time. However should the club acquire indoor weekend space elsewhere they would wish to continue and help with the club.

Two sets of kit have been purchased. One for year 5 and the other for year 6 pupils. Year 5 kit was donated form Group4 and the school, and the other from the Sports Council complete with Hawkinge Hurricanes logo. This team is now ready to compete with year 7 children when a suitable hall or transport becomes available.

HAWKINGE SCHOOL

The existing basketball wall unit has been bolted onto the regulation 600mm frame and lowered to a more suitable height. Due to the small size of the hall this one unit will make it much safer for the children during their coaching sessions.

The Coach for this school is undergoing training and will be ready to start the club within a couple of weeks. Training has taken place at the Churchill School in both coaching and basic refereeing skills Level 1.

SELSTED SCHOOL

The school has a new sports hall and we have supplied two portable units with a further 4 wall units at heights from 8 feet to 9ft 6 inches, All on 600mm frames from the wall. This hall is the only one at the moment suitable for competition in a very fast moving game. We have been requested to paint permanent markings on the floor.

The basketball class is a mixture of years 5 & 6 both boys and girls and looking forward to their first competitive games very soon. The Games Teacher is now a qualified Level 1 Coach/Referee. I look on this hall as a future centre of basketball excellence when suitable transport becomes available to bring the children in.

We have now formed the basis of the Hawkinge Hurricanes Basketball Club similar to the one I formed at Canterbury, which now has several age group

Clubs and a team in the National League.

Besides Basketball. Several other sports have been catered for with the supply equipment costing over £7,000. If you want to see what our youngsters are capable of come along to our next inter-school competition. ‘World Cup with discipline’.
