FERRY COUPLE'S DAY TRIP COSTS £150,000

Frugoni Alessandro and Daniella Abieu caused a huge air and sea search yesterday (13 November) after they disappeared from a cross channel ferry.

They were later found safe and well at home in Belgium after they hitched a lift home in a lorry without letting their coach driver know.

The coach driver raised the alarm when the  P&O Pride of Kent ferry docked in Calais.

A £150,000 rescue operation involving Dover, Calais and Boulogne lifeboats, the coastguard tug Anglian Monarch, a coastguard spotter plane, two French helicopters and a French frigate was launched.

They search lasted for nine hours before being called off at midday after rescue teams failed to find any sign of them and coastguards said there was no chance of surviving so long in the icy waters.
