HIGH SPEED TRAIN LINK IS JUST A YEAR OFF

High Speed One

The opening of the 68 mile Channel Tunnel Rail Link from Folkestone to London's St Pancras station, is just one year away.

Backers of the £5.8bn high-speed line will announce tomorrow that it will enter service in exactly a year's time.

It is to be renamed High Speed One, and will be Britain's first new railway line in a century and will cut journey times to Paris and Brussels by 20 minutes.

From 2009, high-speed commuter trains will start using the new line, cutting the journey time from Ashford in Kent to central London to just 29 minutes. Services to Folkestone, taking just over an hour, and to Dover are expected to follow.
