BOGUS CALLERS ROB 90-YEAR-OLD LADY

Local police are warning elderly residents to beware after bogus callers tricked a 90-year-old lady into letting them into her home.

The lady was at home in Rectory Lane, Saltwood on Wednesday afternoon at about 1.20pm when two men called claiming to be from the water board. They entered her home and one of them insisted that she turn her taps in the kitchen on to empty her tank due to a virus.

The other man was left alone whilst the lady went into the kitchen.

When the men had gone she noticed her handbag, which had been in her bedroom, had been stolen. It contained around £45 cash.

Both men are described as white and believed to be in their early 20s. The one who did the talking spoke with a local accent, and was around 5ft 6in tall and well built and was wearing black trousers and a black top.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact DS Ivan Pickering on 01303 850055.

Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. This call is free, you don’t have to leave your name and could be eligible for a cash reward.

If you have elderly neighbours or relatives, please warn them not to open the door to callers without having the chain in place and not to allow anyone into their home if they do not know who they are. The Utility Companies will always make a prior appointment if they wish to come into your home.
