AT LAST, CROSSINGS FOR SHEPWAY'S FATAL CRASH RAILWAY

Plans to put level crossing barriers on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway line are scheduled to be discussed later in the month after two fatal accidents at unguarded crossings on the line.

In August 2003, Kevin Crouch died when the train he was driving collided with a car on the crossing at Burmarsh and in July 2005 engine driver Suzanne Martin was killed at the Dungeness Road crossing when her train also collided with a car.

There are 13 crossings in total and it is hoped they will all have barriers in due course but initially three barriers costing almost £100,000 each are hoped to be sited at Botolph's Bridge, Battery Road and Burmash Road, where the first accident occurred.

According to police, motorists have have still been ignoring red warning lights at the crossings, despite the accidents.

Railway management will have talks with Kent County Council in an attempt to raise some of the cash.
