PETER SMITH ASSISTS IN ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL

Local councillor Peter Smith assisted the Bomb Disposal Team yesterday (24 September) by delivering 25 bags of Homebase builders sand to cover the ordnance found in a back garden of a Hawkinge home.

Peter told the Gazette that the Team had been waiting some time for Kent County Council (KCC) to arrive with sandbags so he drove to the local Homebase and bought twenty five bags of builders sand and delivered them to the Army Team. This enabled them to use the bags and safely carry out a controlled explosion. Peter said that KCC arrived shortly after, with their consignment of bags, some two hours after the call.

Parish and Shepway District Councillor Peter Smith was critical of the response time by the County Council. He wondered what would have happened in the case of flooding on Romney Marsh if it was down to KCC to supply the sandbags.

But Cllr Smith praised the actions of Shepway Council which he said had acted promptly.
