HAWKINGE BOMB DRAMA

The Army successfully carried out a controlled explosion this afternoon after a  suspected World War Two was discovered in Grebe Close Hawkinge today (24 September).

300 people living within 100 metres of the scene were evacuated to the Hawkinge Community Centre.

Shepway District Council commandeered the Centre for residents who were forced to leave their homes and provided refreshments during the emergency.

Chairman of the Hawkinge Community Centre John Heasman told the Gazette: "There was no panic and residents are being looked after in the Centre.

"The Tesco store in the village have donated tea, coffee and snacks to the evacuated villagers".

John arranged for police to escort a lady back to her home after she discovered she had left her insulin at home' when she arrived at the Community Centre.

Kent Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of explosives offences.
