VILLAGE DAY CENTRE RE-OPENS

A newly refurbished and extended day centre has re-opened for elderly people in Everist Court, Lyminge, heralding the success of a partnership between Age Concern, Kent County Council and Shepway Council.

The centre is fully equipped with modern kitchen, lounge, dining room, coffee room, treatment room, laundry, and hairdressers.

Steve Leidecker, Area Director for Social Services at Kent County Council, said the upgraded and refurbished centre would serve local elderly people for many years.

“Everist Court has the standard of facilities fit for the 21st century. The project has been a real success, and is an example of a project rooted in partnership. A lot of people talk about partnerships, this is a real illustration of how well they can work.

He paid tribute to Age Concern Elham Rural trustees for the project’s success.

“It was down to your courage and determination. It is an outstanding achievement.â€?

Cllr Brian Copping, Shepway Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said the council had a number of partners it worked with to provide housing and care in the community.

“Age Concern is one of the partners we have worked with at Everist Court. We hope that elderly people, especially those who are frail, will be able to enjoy, and benefit, from all the facilities. The centre is at the heart of the community and will enhance the everyday lives of local elderly people.

The refurbishment was funded by Shepway Council’s Coast and Countryside Housing Services, Kent County Council, Age Concern and the National Lottery.
