MISSILES INSTALLED ABOVE DOVER FERRY PORT

The army has insisted the deployment of an anti aircraft missile system on cliffs overlooking the English Channel is not related to the London bombings.

The rapier missile system has complex tracking mechanisms that can target aircrafts up to four miles away and can hit an aircraft travelling at one-and-a-half times faster than the speed of sound.

The missiles will be manned by troops from the 16th Regiment Royal Artillery based at Shorncliffe Barracks in Folkestone.

The Ministry of Defence said the missiles were moved into place today (2 August) as part of a NATO exercise.
