ARMED POLICE DRAFTED IN TO PROTECT CHANNEL TUNNEL

Following today's London terror attacks (7 July) more police have been drafted in to protect Kent's  ports and airports, including the Channel Tunnel and Dover's ferry terminal.

Police are patrolling local railway stations and  litter bins on platforms and booking halls have been removed.

Security and vehicle checks have been stepped up and more armed police officers are likely to be seen at vulnerable sites across Kent.

Kent's Chief Constable Mike Fuller speaking to BBC South East said: "We are very concerned that we ensure security is maintained within the county.

"We have set up a large security operation within the county to make sure all key sites and people using the roads, the rail network and other transport networks are protected.

"Members of the public may see armed officers as part of this operation but should not be alarmed by that.

"It is to ensure they are protected."
