HAWKINGE NIGHT BUS SERVICE SCRAPPED

The Shepway Nite Rider Service, which has been in operation for late night revellers from Folkestone to Hawkinge since 27th May 2005, has been withdrawn for operational reasons until further notice.

Running up to 2.15am on Friday and Saturday nights from Folkestone town centre, it offered a £1 ride home after a night on the town.

The double-decker Nite Rider aimed to reduce late-night trouble and get people home safely and quickly after a night out, and police have reported that incidents of criminal damage and assaults have gone down since the service was introduced at the end of May.

Shepway District Council and Kent Police are due to meet in the next few days to discuss the issues that have led to the withdrawal of the service.

Sarah Williams, Shepway Crime Reduction Officer says, “It is disappointing that the service has been withdrawn, as evidence shows that the bus has contributed to a reduction in criminal damage and anti-social behaviour on routes out of the town centre�.
