PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

Dear Ed,

I note with interest correspondent J Cullen’s comments concerning problems in Hawkinge. Whilst I applaud and fully support the remarks suggesting that residents do things for themselves, rather than waiting for someone else to come and do it for them. I too have long supported the view that people need to stand up and be counted; there is much to much “just walking away.

However, there are two points that should be also be made; the first concerns the serious matter of taking the law into one’s own hands which is a very dangerous step for any community and is to be discouraged.

The second, and here I don’t think that J Cullen understands the differing situations in Alkham and Hawkinge, depends on the “communityâ€? to support itself. The important factor here is “communityâ€? and what comprises “communityâ€?, and a sense of “communityâ€?.

Community is just not a collection of houses otherwise Hawkinge would be very rich indeed. No; community is formed from the relationships that are forged between neighbours; “neighbourlinessâ€? if you like, helping your neighbour in times of need or not worrying about asking a neighbour for help – a lift to the hospital to visit a friend or relative for example.

Hawkinge has suffered an increase in housing of approximately 800 odd in very few years; under these circumstances relationships are very difficult, if not impossible, to form and “communityâ€? has not appeared. Indeed, the opposite can be claimed since such a large influx of extra people has destroyed the community that existed before the housing bonanza got under way.

All planners seem to be ignorant of what takes place under the circumstances currently prevailing in Hawkinge.

I wonder how J Cullen would respond to 800 odd houses being dumped on Alkham in the space of four or five years?

Perhaps someone should whisper the name Alkham in the direction of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister?

No, I'm joking - it would spoil such a pretty little place, but it would certainly change the face of the village there.
