REPORT SAYS COUNCIL HAS MADE ONLY LIMITED PROGRESS

Stronger leadership, improved performance in some areas but o­nly limited progress, report inspectors after their three day visit to Shepway District Council in April 2005.

Their visit followed the council’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) in July last year when it was rated as a ‘weak’ authority.

The inspectors’ follow-up report said  that Shepway District Council has made limited progress in addressing the weaknesses identified last year, and it is removing significant barriers to improvement.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Robert Bliss, welcomed the report’s findings. “It recognises that there is strong and clear officer leadership supported by political drive o­n the priorities for internal improvement. We are working to deliver our recovery plan and there is a will across the council to put us o­n the road to recovery.â€?

Alistair Stewart, Chief Executive, said: “There are things that need attention like community engagement, customer focus and the role of scrutiny. We must also work harder to deliver improvements in some of our priority areas.

“But we have worked hard since our CPA inspection and have made progress. When we are reviewed in November I expect us to have moved even further forward.�
