MICHAEL ROWS THE BOAT ASHORE

Lib Dems are sinking in Shepway after Michael Howard doubled his majority in Folkestone and Hythe but has failed to become Britain's next Prime Minister.

With a 5.6% swing against Liberal Democrat candidate Peter Carroll, their hopes of "decapitating" the tories were dashed.
