LABOUR CANDIDATE CLAIMS LIB DEM ASKED HER TO PULL OUT OF ELECTION

The Labour Party candidate for Folkestone and Hythe, has claimed she was asked to stand down by Liberal Democrat party official John Stevens.

It was reported on the BBC website that Maureen Tomison claimed she was "bombarded by phone calls" from Mr Stevens to pull out of the election to increase his party's chances but  Mr Stevens claimed they had only spoken twice.

Mr Stevens told BBC News he had asked Ms Tomison to join the Lib Dems.

Mr Stevens, a former Tory MEP, is now vice-chairman of the Peel Group, which is committed to fighting Liberal Democrat campaigns against the Tories, but is not affiliated to the main party.

The Liberal Democrats  Folkestone and Hythe candidate Peter Carroll is reported as saying they had nothing to do with the calls.

The national Liberal Democrats said they had no knowledge of Mr Stevens' actions.
