GARDENERS SOCIETY MEETING 2 MARCH 2005

Despite atrocious weather conditions and the penetrating cold twenty-four members and two new members attended a modified talk about "Daffodils for Showing" on March 2nd in Hawkinge Village Hall.

Mrs Doulton let us into many secrets for success - one being to plant your bulbs in pots to eliminate slug damage and to bring them under some cover nearer the Show date.

Pick flowers in full bloom about three days before presentation and store in cold water up to their necks.

The various divisions for showing were interpreted for us, and we were all amazed to learn that there are some 30000 varieties in all-not many are freely available and the speaker agreed she would compile a list of show quality bulbs for us along with the suppliers details.

The only entrant for flower arransement for spring was by Mrs Jenny Armitage. It was a most delightful and colourful composition and she received a good round of applause.

No refreshments and no Raffle due to the need to get home early and safely.

Next month we hope that normal service will resume when we welcome again Mr L Manser who will give an illustrated talk on BULBS CORMS AND RHIZOMES, if you dont know what the latter is, why not come along and find out on APRIL 6th at 7.30.
