NEW SUPERMARKET FOR HAWKINGE

The plans for the Lidl supermarket in Hawkinge were passed at last night's Development Control Committee meeting. (22 March)

In May 2004 the District Council turned down the plans for the supermarket giving one of the reasons as a resulting increase in traffic.

But an amendment put forward by Cllr Peter Smith and seconded by Cllr David Callahan to implement a traffic safety impact study was defeated.

Cllr Smith argued that the entrance to the supermarket will see a marked increase in traffic once a planned 500 homes are built in the village.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Smith said: "As a ward councillor for Hawkinge, we have to accept the building of new homes, but have to wait for the infrastructure that is needed.

"We have to wait for roads to be adopted, street lighting to be repaired, grass to be cut and dog waste bins to be placed around the village."
