Michael and Susan meet the School Council

CHURCHILL SCHOOL PUPILS MEET  FORMER LEADER

Local MP Michael Howard  visited The Churchill School in Haven Drive, Hawkinge today (9 December) together with the Lead Member for Education on Kent County Council, and district councillor, Susan Carey.

Michael and Susan were met by the headteacher Jennie Carter and were taken on a tour of the classrooms where they could view teaching methods first hand.

Following this they met with the school council which is elected by the pupils each year. It is responsible for making decisions including the choosing of which charities to support. They have been supporting Niger this year. Also they review progress on projects which include the setting up of a breakfast club and completing administration tasks for the Healthy Schools Award.

The school council quizzed Michael with a number of probing questions. He was asked what he would have done if he had been the Prime Minister and how he would have changed Government. On a lighter note he was also asked about his hobbies and what he likes to watch on television.

The site on which the school is built  is a memorial to England's "Finest Hour" and the school is named after the then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. The Governors also adopted the Churchill School motto of "Honesty, Responsibility and Moral Courage" as a tribute to all those who gave their lives in the Second World War and to pass on these important values to a new generation.
