FOLKESTONE PROTEST SEEKS TO FREE ASYLUM SEEKERS FOR CHRISTMAS

Asylum seeker supporters are protesting at the Folkestone reporting centre this morning (Christmas Eve).

The Kent Campaign to Defend Asylum Seekers are calling to suspend asylum detention for a "Christmas amnesty".

Spokesman for the group Jon Flaig said asylum seekers were having to sign in each day there, not knowing if they would be detained.

But the Home Office said applications for asylum were examined with care and individual circumstances considered. A spokesman said trained case workers used accurate information and looked at individual circumstances when considering applications.

The campaign group has called on the town's residents to support people who have fled "violence, persecution and oppression" by backing the protest.
