SUSAN LANDS TOP EDUCATION JOB

Kent County Council’s new leader, Paul Carter, has moved quickly to bring new talent into his top team. One of the winners in his reshuffle is local County Councillor for the Elham Valley Susan Carey who is now Lead Member for Education.

Susan, who is also a Shepway Councillor,  recently toured the Churchill School in Hawkinge.

There are 615 maintained schools in Kent, over 200,000 pupils and nearly 12,000 teachers.

Susan says, "I’m thrilled to be given this responsibility. KCC is working hard to improve school standards and school facilities. There’s major investment in Information Technology and school buildings and a drive to tailor learning to individual children. It’s a very exciting time to join the education team."

Susan was elected in May 2005 and has only been at County Hall for five months but Paul Carter was keen to promote on merit rather than time served and has appointed six of the 2005 intake into lead member roles.

Folkestone town mayor, George Bunting, welcomed Susan’s promotion saying, "It’s good for our area to have one of our County Councillors in such an important role. I always knew Susan would shine."

Shepway Leader, Robert Bliss, who was also elected to County Council in May, said, "I’m delighted that one of the Shepway area County Councillors has been chosen for a Lead Member role. We’re all really proud of Susan."
