RECYCLING LORRIES RECALLED

The lorries that collect Shepway's recycled waste have been taken off the road as a safety measure following a problem with lifting gear o­n o­ne of the vehicles.

Shepway Council decided to recall the fleet of 10 so that further checks can be made.

“This was done simply as a precaution. Our prime consideration has to be for the safety of the public and the men working for our contractors, Cleanaway,� said Leader of the Council, Robert Bliss.

The council is appealing to residents to put their blue bags and black boxes out for collection as usual.

“We plan to have a replacement fleet of kerbside collection vehicles o­n the road as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will be using standard collection freighters to collect paper, card, tins, cans, glass and plastic bottles from blue bags and black boxes. There will be no disruption to the service,â€? said Cllr Bliss

“We would like to reassure residents that all the material collected by the freighters will be recycled. Although it might look as if it is all being mixed in together, it will not be going to landfill. It will go first to our recycling centre at Ross Depot for bulking and then be taken to a modern recycling centre in Greenwich for sorting.�

“We would ask o­nce again for everyone to continue to recycle as normal during this temporary change to the collection.â€?
