MAN WALKS THROUGH TUNNEL TO FRANCE IN FLIP FLOPS

<P align=left>A man appeared in Folkestone Magistrates court yesterday after making an treacherous walk through the Channel Tunnel to France in his flip-flops.

<P align=left>South African, Lance Dyer, 38, was arrested by French police after he emerged from the 31-mile tunnel in Calais.

He was spotted by security cameras at the French end of the 50km tunnel early on Sunday morning. With trains passing at nearly 100mph Mr Dyer was lucky not to have been 'sucked up' by a train as it passed, a spokesman said

French police said the man appeared to be mentally unstable. He was not a migrant or a refugee, they said, and he has been returned to Britain where he was arrested by Kent police.

A spokesperson for tunnel operator Eurotunnel said the man had taken advantage of a "brief malfunction of the systems of surveillance".
