HOWARD TO CHALLENGE BED CLOSURE AT ROYAL VIC

Folkestone and Hythe MP Michael Howard is to challenge the proposal of the Shepway Primary Care Trust to close the two wards at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone, which provide care and rehabilitation. The wards have 41 beds between them.

Mr Howard said: “I am not convinced by the reasoning behind the Trust’s proposal. They say that more care and rehabilitation can be provided in the community but some people will still need to be in hospital. Why can’t they be at the Royal Vic?

Secondly the Trust says that the standards of the Royal College would not be met if the two wards were left open after the removal of the stroke unit to the William Harvey next month. I want to know whether the Royal College have been asked or whether the Trust is simply guessing.

Thirdly, I want to know what scope there is for moving beds from other parts of East Kent to the Royal Vic".
