DIY SHOCK FOR 2005

New strict regulations come into force on 1 January covering electrical work in the home.

It will be necessary for all electrical work to comply with new Building Regulations coming into force on 1st January, and to be carried out by people competent to do so.

Ed Elcock, Shepway Council’s Building Control Manager said most small jobs, like replacing a socket-outlet or a light switch on an existing circuit, would not be affected by the new safety regulations.

“Generally, the addition of a new circuit, rewiring and work carried out in special locations, for instance kitchens, bathrooms, gardens and swimming pools, will require approval. Some exceptions in relation to minor work, the replacement of socket outlets, light switches and ceiling roses, will not need Building Regulation consent, said Ed.

Work carried out by people not registered as ‘competent persons’ under Part P of the rules will need a Building Regulation application.

For further information about the new regulations contact Shepway District Council Building Control on 01303 852418 or visit www.shepway.gov.uk and go to Building Control.
